EXPLORING POLITICS IN THE CAMPUS SETTING
By Vivian Nnagboro
Taking an in-depth look into the political scene of any university reveals an attempt to mirror the kind of politics in the larger society. A university’s political scene is a small-scale replica of a much larger design that prepares one for the outside world. The campus provides opportunities to explore different political ideologies that help shape your worldview. No matter how much you claim to be interested or not interested in politics, it will always affect your life. You just have to be wise enough to recognize and use this to your advantage.
Participating in politics can be done in various ways. However, you need to choose the method that suits you best. You could choose to be a part of the executive, the arm of the association’s leadership that takes charge of most of the association’s activities. Alternatively, you could be a part of the association’s legislature, the arm that makes and enforces laws and checks and balances the executives every time. You could also choose to join the press and be a part of the fourth estate of the realm. In essence, you can choose to be a watchdog and the voice of the people. Regardless of the role you choose, it is essential to stay vigilant and keep yourself abreast of all the activities of those organizations.
They say that in whatever you choose, it is best to start small while aiming high. Similarly, if you want to be a voice for political change in society, your university campus is a great place to start. It is like a training ground that prepares you for the future. Several people forget that the little actions we take today can go a long way in shaping our future. So, it’s time to take a stand and choose who you want to become because sitting on the fence might seem harmless today, but it might not be so tomorrow.
