THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP: BREAKING BARRIERS AND CREARING CHANGE

By Eniola Fase

Throughout history, women have faced numerous obstacles when taking on leadership roles. From societal expectations to discriminatory practices, the path to leadership has faced challenges for women. However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards recognizing the value that women bring to leadership positions and breaking down the barriers that have prevented them from taking on these roles.

Women's leadership role is critical for creating change and driving progress in organizations and communities. Women leaders bring unique perspectives and experiences to the table that can lead to more inclusive decision-making and better outcomes for everyone involved. Research has shown that companies with more women in leadership tend to perform better financially and have more diverse and innovative teams.

Despite this, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions in many industries. According to a 2021 report by the World Economic Forum, women hold just 27% of managerial positions globally. This lack of representation is not only a disservice to women but also a missed opportunity for organizations to tap into the potential of diverse leadership.

Breaking down the barriers that prevent women from taking on leadership roles requires a multifaceted approach. Organizations must actively work to address systemic barriers, such as gender bias and pay inequality, that prevents women from advancing in their careers. This can include implementing policies such as equal pay for equal work, flexible work arrangements, and transparent promotion processes.

Individuals can also promote women's leadership by actively supporting and mentoring women in their careers. This can include advocating for women's voices to be heard in meetings and decision-making processes, sharing opportunities for professional development and networking, and providing mentorship and sponsorship to women.

In addition to addressing systemic barriers and promoting individual support, women must feel empowered to take on leadership roles. This can involve building confidence, developing leadership skills, and seeking opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities. Women can also benefit from seeking out mentorship and networking opportunities with other women leaders to build a supportive community and gain insights into the unique challenges and opportunities women face in leadership.

In conclusion, women's leadership role is critical for driving progress and creating change in organizations and communities. Breaking down the barriers that prevent women from taking on leadership roles requires a multifaceted approach that addresses systemic barriers, promotes individual support, and empowers women to take on leadership responsibilities. By working together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women leaders, we can unlock the full potential of diverse leadership and drive meaningful progress toward a more equitable future.
