After a long hiatus, Geography Department Students Association (NUGSA, UI) Inaugurates a Students Representative Council and a Judicial Council

On Wednesday, the 16th of November 2022, the Nigerian Universities Geography Students Association (NUGSA) UI, had it’s first inauguration of the NUGSA Council and the NUGSA Judicial Council.
The inauguration started at around 3:30pm with a representative from the NUGSA Electoral Commission (NEC) in person of Miss Kawthar welcoming everyone present to the short notice meeting.
The chairman of the NEC Miss Meekness expressed her overwhelming Joy in the her welcome speech as she was glad that after a long time of not having these two associations in power, it’s been finally brought back to life in her time. She urged the Representatives to take their job seriously as they have been called to serve.
The president of the association Mr Olarewaju Taiwo also welcomed everyone, gave a special welcome to the staff adviser, Dr Olaniran. He also urged the members of the different councils to carry out their duties effectively and he also seeks for a cordial relationship between the representative council and executive council and immediately he went into the business of the day.
He then proceeds to swear in the chief Judge of the Judicial Council; Miss Megafortune Balogun, she takes her oath of office and immediately she was to perform her first duty.
The chief judge then proceeds to swear in the speaker of the NUGSA House of Representatives. Miss Priscilla Ada as she takes the oath of office as the speaker of the house.
Out of the 8 members that were to be present for the Student Representative Council, only 6 were present to take their oath of office. And out of the 5 members who were to be present for the Judicial Council, only 4 were present to take their oath of office.

The staff adviser, Dr. Olaniran commends the work of the executive council.
He further speaks on how NUGSA lost its credibility due to some of the past NUGSA executives.
And to ensure the smooth running of NUGSA, the executive needs to prepare their budget and lay it before the legislature.
The legislature also has the job of scrutinizing the budget of the executive council in terms of their roles.
In case of any issue between the legislature and executive, it should be referred to the Judicial Council.
The staff adviser speaks heavily on the need for right structure.
He also asked the President to write officially to the head of department stating the three arms of government and members of each council.
The first assignment given to the Judicial Council was the amendment of the NUGSA constitution to accommodate the Judicial Council.
The staff adviser also said he would leave the executives to their duties but if they misbehave, they will be dealt with.
The staff adviser urged NUGSA Press to come alive and give up to date news and if possible, a magazine can be published by the end of the session.
He also spoke about the need to have a website for the department
He ended by congratulating the members of each council.
The meeting ended at around 4:15pm with a closing remark by the chairman of the NEC.
