FEATURES: CULTURAL NIGHT

OCTOBER 16: A NIGHT OF CULTURE AND FUN

BY HABIB LANLEHIN

October 16 2021 was a day that will forever be imprinted on the minds of “UITES” especially those from THE FACULTY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.
University of Ibadan is one of the most “dreaded” Universities when it comes to academic prowess and astute belief in Educational capabilities before anything else. To the outside world all we do is read, read, read and then read some more but surprisingly in the middle of never ending classes, unending trips to and fro from KDL, countless nights spent at the SUB building, TDB, MTN and whatever the “bookworms” of this prestigious university has come up with to retain their honor as the ‘FIRST AND THE BEST” the only faculty with the article “THE” in the university still managed to take a night out and party till the sun went down.

It all started with the sub-dean, DR, Lafenwa speech which was followed by his dance steps which lit the dance floor and blessed the event.
A live band with soothing music blesses the atmosphere and sweet aromas of local foods tantalizes the nostrils as FATSSSAites gather with a singular mission of having fun and perhaps find “love” (single pringles}. The 100lv students are first to grace the dance floor with shy dancing steps and tiny little books folded under the fold of their flowing “ Agbadas” and tightly wrapped “iros” with the musician of the day, Oluwarotimi filling the air with friendly jest and beautifully hidden sarcasms at the freshers who are just getting used to life at the University.

Cultural night was not a night meant for fun and matchmaking alone as provision was made for a short lecture on the major tribes in Nigeria. The university is a big and diverse community which houses lots of ethnic groups, one of the major lessons of the day is RETERATING that we are all Nigerians and as such we are united by generations of friendships, love, mutual support etc.
Echoes of drums, reverberating sounds of the “ sekere” and olurotimi sang “ eyin ti 200lv e na owo soke, ke sodi wuke ka wa fi ese ra ijo” or something of the nature, it is important to note that liquor was flowing freely. It was a total carnage of dances and happiness after surviving their first year in the University and getting rid of the “ freshers “ tittle the basis of their joy could somewhat be understood.

A flowing agbada is never complete without a befitting cap and a beautifully sown iro and buba is naked without a crafty gele to cover its nakedness. After a semester of wearing wigs, caps, and hurriedly tied scarfs and some fashionistas in a durag ( don’t ask me why) it was time to test the beautiful FATSSAites and see who can tie, knot and craft a beautiful “gele” as well as sing a beautiful tune in his/her native language.
With amazing dancing steps and highly raised shoulders the 300lv students stepped gingerly unto the dance floor and awed the spectators with masterclass dancing. They just have to show the 200/100lv “kids” that they will run academic tutorials for them and also school them on the dance floor. Congratulations to them.

Article “THE” and lots of creative, bright, promising, deep thinkers etc are some of the distinguishing factors that set the faculty of the social sciences apart from other faculties. Theen join the crowd in applauding set of FATSSSAites as they come on stage to entertain the audience with their craft. Stage drama is one of the most entertaining genre of drama, I promised you would laugh your heads off and learn  a lot from this beautiful and brilliant FATSSSAites.
Who remembers the popular song from this “Ajani” drama - “ igba die loku tani bawon ka iwe mon owo la ma ka……..? that definitely was the mood when the 400lv stepped on the sub-dean blessed dancefloor how happy they must be that 500lv doesn’t exist in the faculty. It was a beautiful shut down as they threaten to bring down the school with powerful stamps from their dancing and the ladies created a new rhythm with sounds of their waist beads as they shake and wriggle what the guys love to see and watch bounce and shake.

No matter how long the night is it would still end, all that starts end and the bottle runs out of liquor that was the reality on the fun filled night when FATSSSAites had to put an end to the events of the night but not before the dance floor was open to all and friends and people in relationships danced together while the single pringles tries their luck with people of the oppsite gender or whatever catches their fancy, breakfast says goodnight.
